How to Clean a Caravan

If your caravan is starting to look dirty and past its best, then you need a cleaner that is tough on biological growth, and soft on the caravan’s surface, to restore its beauty and get you ready for your travels or holiday.

Caravans withstand all kinds of weather such as wind, rain, sun and snow, which makes them particularly vulnerable to the growth of biological contaminants. Unsightly algae, mould, mildew, lichen and fungi etc are commonly responsible for the unpleasant, green slime coating that occurs on the caravan’s surface.

When left outdoors, caravans provide the perfect breeding ground for bacteria and grime. The combination of moisture, sunlight, shade, and exposure to organic debris, can cause discolouration and, if left untreated, it can even lead to rust which is damaging to the caravan.

The Best Way to Clean a Caravan

The most effective way to not only clean your caravan, but provide some protection against future biological growth, is to use a specialist algae remover product such as GK Greener Kleener.

This advanced cleaning solution not only eliminates 99.9% of bacterial growth, ensuring a hygienic environment for you and your family, but also powerfully tackles common caravan nuisances like mould, lichen, and algae.

Its fast-acting formula starts working within minutes, eradicating biological contaminants and continuing to break down grime naturally over time. Plus, its versatility means you can confidently use it on different areas of your caravan, from the exterior panels and windows to interior fixtures and fittings, without worrying about damage.

What truly sets Greener Kleener apart for caravan owners is its user-friendly and environmentally conscious design. Application is simple, just use a garden sprayer or brush and the bleach-free, non-caustic, and non-acidic formula ensures safety for both your caravan surfaces and the environment.

With a near-neutral pH, it poses no long-term risks to children or pets once dry, making it ideal for family adventures. Best of all, after the initial deep clean, subsequent maintenance becomes much quicker, leaving you more time to relax and enjoy your travels rather than constantly battling dirt and grime.

How to Apply GK Greener Kleener to a Caravan

Weather conditions on the day of treatment need to be dry, above 8 degrees, with no rain forecast for at least 4 hours.

Sweep, brush/mechanically remove loose debris and any bulky vegetative growth from your shelter. Cover nearby plants and grass areas with a tarpaulin or waterproof cover (it’s safe on all hard surfaces), but may cause small areas of brown staining on vegetation.

When using Greener Kleener always wear appropriate clothing to avoid contact with the skin, including gloves, safety goggles or face visor. Pour tap water into your preferred dispenser before adding the Greener Kleener – it is a surfactant and foams up vigorously like washing up liquid!

Greener Kleener can be applied with a garden pump sprayer, sponge, watering can, roller or brush. Simply saturate the surfaces inside and out (slightly wetting is not enough), at around 0.25 litres of mix per square meter apply and leave then allow to evaporate naturally.

For heavy bacterial loads you may decide to brush in the material, agitating it will loosen and remove grease and grime, the dirt will be held within the suds. You may want to rinse this off, and follow up with a preventive spray as indicated above.

What to Expect

Most bacteria will be unviable within 15 minutes of treatment, evidence of dead biofilms will be seen as a change of staining colour by the day's end.

The staining will desiccate and powder away using natural cycles of sun and rain, the timing of this is weather dependent but evidence of staining is usually gone within two weeks.

If there has been little rainfall for three weeks and staining remains it may be useful to hose down your caravan surfaces.

Can You Power Wash a Caravan?

No, it is not recommended to use a high-pressure power washer on your caravan because they can damage seals, windows and paint, or could even cause a dint in your caravan.

If you have a low-pressure power wash then you can use this to gently wash away surface grime. However, we would recommend using this in conjunction with a specialist cleaner to prevent contaminants from returning.

Keep Your Caravan Contaminant-Free

Dry Storage is Best: Protect your caravan from algae and microbiological contaminants by storing it in a dry, well-ventilated space like a garage or covered area. This simple step significantly reduces the moist conditions biological matter loves.

Park Away from Plants: Minimise falling organic matter – a key food source for algae – by parking your caravan away from trees and bushes. This helps prevent rapid green growth and keeps your caravan looking its best.

Summary

The most effective way to clean your caravan is to use a specialist cleaner and algae-remover product such as GK Greener Kleener. This advanced cleaning solution eliminates 99.9% of bacterial growth and powerfully tackles common caravan nuisances like mould, lichen, and algae.
