Product Description

What Makes a Patio Cleaner Actually Work?

Walk into any garden centre and you'll find shelves of products called patio cleaners. The difference between them isn't the bottle or the label, it's whether the active chemistry kills the biological organism causing the problem, or simply bleaches it temporarily invisible.

Algae, mould, lichen, and bacteria aren't stains in the way that mud or leaf tannin is a stain. They are living organisms embedded in the surface of paving, stone, and concrete.

Bleach-based patio cleaners remove the visible pigmentation which looks like it's worked, but leave the organism's root structure alive and viable in the stone's surface. Within weeks to months, the staining returns because the organism was never killed; it was bleached. The result is a cleaning cycle that feels effective but requires repeating more and more frequently as the biological loading on the surface continues to accumulate.

GK Path & Patio Cleaner takes a fundamentally different approach. Its active DDAC biocidal chemistry kills the biological organisms responsible for surface staining at a cellular level, destroying the organism itself, not just removing its visible evidence. This is why results are more durable, why subsequent maintenance applications work faster, and why treated surfaces stay cleaner for longer than surfaces treated with bleach-based alternatives.

How GK Path & Patio Cleaner Works: The Weather Cycle Method

GK Path & Patio Cleaner is a natural surfactant biocide that works in two phases: immediate kill and progressive removal.

On application, the product foams vigorously, which is a visible, practical indicator that confirms the surface is receiving complete coverage. Any area that hasn't foamed hasn't been treated. This foaming behaviour makes systematic application straightforward even on large patio areas where it's easy to miss sections.

The biocidal chemistry begins killing biological growth on contact. The removal phase then works in conjunction with natural weather cycles. UV radiation from the sun desiccates the dead biological matter; rainfall progressively washes the residue from the surface. This is not a slow inefficiency, it is the mechanism that produces results significantly more durable than pressure washing or bleach treatment, because the dead material is removed progressively from the surface rather than being displaced to resurface again from beneath.

For mild staining, improvement is typically visible within a few days. For heavier biological loading of established lichen, thick algae, or multi-year mould accumulation, meaningful results develop over two to three months. In severe cases, the full result may take six to twelve months. Crucially, subsequent maintenance applications work considerably faster, usually within days, because baseline biological loading has been reduced by previous treatments. The maintenance cycle becomes progressively shorter and easier with each application, which is the opposite of what happens with bleach-based cleaning.

A Patio Cleaner for Every Patio Surface

GK Path & Patio Cleaner is bleach-free, acid-free, ammonia-free, and solvent-free, boasting a formula specifically designed to be safe on every outdoor surface it contacts. It is non-oxidising, which means it cannot discolour, degrade, or structurally affect any non-living hard surface. This makes it genuinely suitable for the full range of patio and path surface materials:

  • Natural stone patios: Indian sandstone, limestone, slate, and flagstone. The bleach-free formula will not discolour or etch natural stone finishes.
  • Porcelain paving: safe on indoor and outdoor porcelain without surface damage or finish degradation.
  • Concrete and block paving: driveways, paths, and hard-standing areas affected by biological growth and surface staining.
  • Decking: timber and composite. The product prevents biofilm accumulation which is the primary cause of slippery decking, and provides biocidal protection against wood-rotting organisms.
  • Render and masonry: external rendered walls, brick, and stonework adjacent to the patio.
  • Roof tiles, solar panels, and conservatories: safe on clay, concrete, slate, and fibreglass roof materials, UPVC, and glass.
  • Caravans, polytunnels, canvas, and fibreglass: safe on all common leisure and agricultural surface materials.
  • Artificial grass and Astroturf: removes biological growth and prevents slippery surface conditions on artificial surfaces.
  • Painted exterior surfaces: safe on all painted hard surfaces without risk of damage to the paint film.
  • Limestone, marble, and sandstone: including sensitive natural stone types that cannot be treated with acid-based cleaners.

The only surfaces excluded are green and sedum roofs.

Path and Patio Cleaner: Safety, Sustainability, and Pet Safety

GK Path & Patio Cleaner has a virtually neutral pH of 6 and contains no bleach, ammonia, acids, or solvents. Once dry, it is safe around children and animals. During application, keep children and pets away from the treated area and wear protective gloves and eye protection as a minimum requirement.

The product is plant-safe provided it is not sprayed directly onto foliage. For nearby planted borders or lawn edges, water thoroughly before application and cover with waterproof sheeting where possible. If accidental overspray occurs, rinse immediately with clean water as the product may cause temporary scorching to foliage, but will not kill established plants, and lawns recover quickly.

If access to the treated area is needed before the product has dried naturally, it can be rinsed down with fresh water after a minimum of one hour, though allowing natural drying produces the best results.

Concentrated Formula: Outstanding Coverage and Value

One 5-litre bottle of GK Path & Patio Cleaner produces up to 25 litres of ready-to-use cleaning solution:

  • Heavy soiling (thick algae, established lichen, severe contamination): dilute 2:1 with water.
  • Light to medium soiling (general biological growth, routine maintenance): dilute 4:1 with water.

At the 4:1 dilution rate, one bottle treats approximately 100 square metres, such as a large patio, a full driveway, or multiple path and patio areas in a single treatment session. At the heavier 2:1 rate for severe contamination, coverage reduces to approximately 50 square metres per bottle.

No specialist equipment is required. A standard garden pump sprayer handles large areas efficiently. The product can also be brush-applied for smaller or more targeted treatment areas.

Apply to a dry surface in dry conditions, with no rain forecast for at least 24 hours. Avoid application during frost or when temperatures are below 8°C. Warmer conditions accelerate visible results; slightly cooler, low-evaporation conditions allow the product more time in contact with the surface and can also produce strong results.

How It Works

Immediate Kill, Not Bleaching

GK Path & Patio Cleaner's active DDAC biocidal chemistry kills algae, mould, lichen, and bacteria at a cellular level, destroying the organism itself rather than simply removing its visible pigmentation. This is why results last longer than bleach-based cleaning, which leaves the organism's root structure alive.

The Foaming Coverage Indicator

On application, the product foams vigorously, giving a direct visual confirmation that the surface is receiving complete coverage. Any area that hasn't foamed hasn't been treated, making systematic application straightforward even on large patio areas.

Progressive Weather-Cycle Removal

Once biological growth is killed, UV radiation desiccates the dead matter and rainfall progressively washes the residue from the surface over subsequent days and weeks. This produces more durable results than pressure washing or bleach treatment, since dead material is removed rather than simply displaced.

Key Features

  • Professional-grade patio cleaner and path and patio cleaner: HSE-licensed biocidal formula kills algae, mould, lichen, and bacteria at cellular level

Application & Storage

Before You Start

Remove any loose debris, excess moss, and heavy vegetative growth from the surface using a stiff brush before applying. Protect nearby plants by watering thoroughly and covering with waterproof sheeting. Keep children and animals away from the treatment area during application and until the surface is fully dry.

Dilute to the Right Strength

Mix the concentrate with clean water in a garden sprayer or suitable container:

  • Heavy soiling (thick algae, established lichen, significant biological loading): 1 part product to 2 parts water.
  • Light to medium soiling (general biological growth, routine maintenance): 1 part product to 4 parts water.

Apply

Apply the diluted solution evenly to the dry patio, path, or outdoor surface using a garden pump sprayer or brush. Ensure thorough, complete coverage. The vigorous foaming on contact confirms adequate product is reaching the surface. Apply in dry conditions with no rain forecast for at least 24 hours. Avoid application during frost or below 8°C.

Leave to Work

Do not rinse after application. GK Path & Patio Cleaner works in conjunction with natural weather cycles. UV and rainfall progressively remove the dead biological matter over subsequent days and weeks. Rinsing immediately after application will reduce effectiveness. If access is needed before natural drying, wait a minimum of one hour before rinsing with clean water.

Repeat and Maintain

For heavy contamination, a second application after the first treatment cycle has completed will accelerate results. For routine maintenance, a single annual or bi-annual application keeps biological loading low and surfaces clean, safe, and free from slip hazards.

Coverage and Storage

One 5-litre bottle makes up to 25 litres of solution, treating approximately 100 square metres at 4:1 dilution, or approximately 50 square metres at 2:1 dilution for heavy soiling. Shelf life is 24 months in the original, unopened container.

Frequently Asked Questions

GK Path & Patio Cleaner is a professional-grade patio cleaner specifically formulated to kill algae, mould, lichen, and bacteria at a cellular level rather than bleaching them temporarily. Its HSE-licensed DDAC biocidal chemistry destroys biological organisms rather than masking them, which is why results last longer and maintenance cycles become shorter with each subsequent treatment. At 4:1 dilution, one 5-litre bottle treats up to 100 square metres.
It depends on the level of biological contamination. For light staining, improvement is typically visible within a few days. For heavier biological loading of established lichen, thick algae, or long-term mould accumulation, meaningful results develop over two to three months as weather cycles progressively remove dead biological matter. In severe cases, the full result may take up to six to twelve months. After the initial treatment, subsequent maintenance applications typically produce visible results within days as baseline biological loading has been reduced.
Yes. The bleach-free, acid-free formula will not discolour, etch, or damage Indian sandstone, limestone, slate, granite, marble, or any other natural stone. This is a meaningful advantage over bleach-based patio cleaners, which can permanently discolour some natural stone finishes. Always test on a small area first and follow the dilution guidance for the specific level of contamination.
Yes. GK Path & Patio Cleaner is suitable for use on both timber and composite decking. It removes the biofilm accumulation that makes decking surfaces slippery underfoot, one of the most common and hazardous garden maintenance problems, and provides ongoing biocidal protection against wood-rotting organisms. Regular annual application on decking is one of the most effective ways to extend its lifespan and maintain safe surface conditions.
Once the treated surface is completely dry, GK Path & Patio Cleaner is safe around children and animals. During application, keep children and pets away from the treatment area. The virtually neutral pH of 6 and bleach-free formula mean the product poses no long-term risk once dry.
No. GK Path & Patio Cleaner should be left on the surface to dry and work naturally. The product works in conjunction with UV and rainfall to progressively remove dead biological matter. Rinsing immediately after application shortens the dwell time and reduces effectiveness. If access to the area is needed urgently, wait at least one hour before rinsing with clean water, though natural drying produces the best results.
Yes. After treatment with GK Path & Patio Cleaner, allow two to three weeks for dead biological matter to begin decomposing before washing down and applying paint or sealant. The decomposed residue rinses away cleanly after this period, leaving a biologically inactive surface that accepts coatings correctly. Annual treatment can also extend the painting and maintenance cycle by keeping biological growth suppressed between full redecoration programmes.
Both products are DDAC-based biocidal cleaners from the GK range, but GK Pro is the more concentrated professional-use product and is designated for trade and contractor use. GK Path & Patio Cleaner is the HSE-licensed DIY product, accessible to homeowners and domestic users, with dilution rates and application guidance suited to domestic patio and path cleaning. For large-scale commercial applications, GK Pro is the appropriate choice.
