Why Outdoor Timber Goes Grey: And What Wood Restoration Actually Does

The greying of outdoor timber is one of the most common and most misunderstood problems in garden and property maintenance. Most people assume weathered grey wood is simply dirty, or that the colour change is a surface stain. In reality, the greying process is a structural change caused by UV radiation.

Wood contains a natural polymer called lignin, which forms part of the cell wall structure and is responsible for the warm brown tones in natural timber. When outdoor wood is exposed to UV light from the sun, the high-energy radiation breaks down lignin at a molecular level, a process called photodegradation. As the lignin degrades, the surface fibres lose their natural pigmentation and the characteristic grey or silver colour appears. This greying is not dirt, and it cannot be removed with a standard cleaner or pressure wash as the lignin has been chemically altered.

Its active chemistry reacts with the degraded surface fibres, restoring the timber to its original natural tone and reopening the wood grain to accept subsequent treatments such as oils, stains, sealers, or preservatives. What GK Wood Restorer Treats: And What It Doesn't

GK Wood Restorer is a specialist wood restoration product, not a general-purpose cleaner, and understanding the distinction matters for getting the right result.

It is designed specifically to reverse UV-induced greying and surface weathering on bare or previously untreated timber. It will also remove surface mould, algae staining, and general grime accumulated on weathered timber during the restoration process. For decking, fencing, garden furniture, window frames, sheds, outbuildings, and any outdoor timber that has been left untreated and has begun to grey, it is the correct starting product.

There are two things it is not designed to do. First, it is not a paint or coating remover, so if the timber surface has been previously painted, stained, or heavily treated with a surface coating, that coating must be removed with an appropriate stripper before GK Wood Restorer is applied.

Second, it is not an oil stain remover, so if the timber has oil contamination from barbecues, teak oil overspill, or similar, a dedicated oil remover such as GK Oil Out should be used to address that first.

With bare, weathered, or lightly contaminated timber, however, GK Wood Restorer delivers one of the most straightforward and satisfying results in the outdoor maintenance category.

The Wood Restoration Process: Step by Step

Good wood restoration is a process, not a single application. GK Wood Restorer is the critical first stage, but the sequence matters:

• Stage 1 - Restore with GK Wood Restorer, reversing UV greying and preparing the grain to accept treatment.
• Stage 2 - Sand lightly if required, to remove any raised grain fibres after the restoration process and produce a smooth, even surface.
• Stage 3 - Protect with the appropriate follow-on treatment such as a penetrating wood sealer, decking oil, or preservative stain, to protect the restored timber from further UV and moisture damage.

Without Stage 3, the restored timber will simply begin to grey again within a season. GK Wood Restorer gives you the timber back in its best condition, but it is the subsequent treatment that locks that condition in. Surface Compatibility: Softwood, Hardwood, and Delicate Timbers

GK Wood Restorer's neutral pH of 7 and biodegradable, liquid formulation make it safe on a wide range of timber types, including surfaces where more aggressive restoration products could cause damage:

• Softwood decking: the most common application, reversing greying on pine, spruce, and pressure-treated decking boards.
• Hardwood decking and furniture: safe on hardwoods including teak, oak, and iroko without raising the grain aggressively or opening the surface excessively.
• Fencing panels, posts, and rails: effective on both treated and untreated fence timber.
• Garden furniture: benches, chairs, tables, and planters in both soft and hardwood.
• Window frames and exterior joinery: safe for use on timber joints without compromising adhesives, making it suitable for painted joinery preparation where the paint has been stripped.
• Sheds, outbuildings, and garden structures: all outdoor timber structures.

One application note specific to all surfaces: avoid contact with metal fixings during the wood restoration process. If the product contacts metal components, rinse immediately with clean water. Do not apply in direct sunlight. Working in shade or on an overcast day extends the working time and prevents premature drying.
