Render is one of the most common exterior wall finishes in the UK, and one of the most susceptible to biological staining. The textured, porous surface of sand and cement render, monocouche, K render, and pebbledash provides ideal conditions for algae, mould, lichen, and bacteria to establish and spread. Once biological growth takes hold on rendered walls, it advances steadily across the surface, holds moisture against the wall, and produces the characteristic green, black, or grey staining that makes a property look poorly maintained regardless of its actual condition.

A render cleaner is a biocidal cleaning solution specifically formulated to remove this type of organic and microbiological contamination from rendered exterior surfaces. Unlike general-purpose outdoor cleaners or bleach-based products that can discolour pigmented render or damage the surface finish, a purpose-made render cleaner targets biological growth without affecting the render substrate beneath.

On non-pigmented surfaces, bleach can produce a quick visible improvement, but on render, particularly through-colour monocouche and K render systems, it carries significant risks that make it an inappropriate choice.

Bleach is a strong oxidising agent. On pigmented render, it can strip or fade the colour permanently, an expensive problem on K-Rend and other through-colour render systems that are chosen precisely for their through-colour finish. On sand and cement render, repeated bleach application accelerates surface carbonation and can promote surface cracking over time. After treating with GK Render Cleaner, allow the dead biological growth to begin decomposing naturally, typically two to three weeks, before washing the surface down and applying paint or sealant. The decomposed material will rinse away cleanly after this period, leaving a biologically clean surface that is ready to accept a new coating properly. Used annually as part of a maintenance programme, GK Render Cleaner helps extend the painting and maintenance cycle by keeping biological loading low between full redecoration cycles.
