Why Oil Stains on Driveways Are So Difficult to Remove

Oil and grease stains on block paving and concrete driveways are among the most persistent outdoor cleaning problems precisely because of how they behave. Petroleum-based oils such as engine oil, hydraulic fluid, cooking fat and diesel are hydrophobic and viscous. When spilled on a porous surface such as block paving, natural sandstone, or concrete, they don't sit on top of the material. They are drawn down into the pore structure of the stone or concrete by capillary action, where they bond with the material at depth.

This is why dish soap, hot water, and standard driveway cleaners give disappointing results on oil staining: they act on the surface layer but can't follow the oil into the pores where the majority of the contamination has settled. Scrubbing disperses the surface stain but leaves the embedded oil in place, and within days the stain reappears as the embedded oil wicks back to the surface.

Effective oil removal from a driveway or patio requires a formula that can penetrate porous surfaces to the same depth as the oil itself and then lift it out.

How GK Oil Out Works: The Oil-Ingesting Difference

GK Oil Out uses an oil-ingesting formula: a concentrated blend of hydrocarbon solvents specifically selected to be chemically compatible with petroleum-based oils and grease. Rather than attempting to break oil down at the surface with alkaline chemistry or dilute it with water, GK Oil Out penetrates into the pore structure of the material alongside the existing contamination and actively draws the oil up and out.

The mechanism works through absorption and emulsification. As GK Oil Out dwells on the surface, it ingests the oil into itself, drawing contamination upward from within the pores and holding it in suspension at the surface. When the treated area is rinsed with hot water or a pressure washer after the dwell period, both the product and the oil it has absorbed are removed together, leaving the pore structure clear of contamination rather than simply masking the visible stain.

Oil Removal From Driveways: Surface by Surface

  • Block paving driveways: the most common application. GK Oil Out penetrates the paving surface and jointing mortar to lift oil from within without disturbing or discolouring the block surface or sand joints.
  • Concrete driveways and garage floors: effective on bare concrete, imprinted concrete, and polished concrete affected by engine oil, hydraulic fluid, or fuel staining.
  • Natural stone patios and paths: including Indian sandstone, limestone, slate, and flagstone. Safe on porous natural stone without etching, bleaching, or surface damage.
  • Marble and granite: specifically confirmed safe for use on these sensitive stone types, which cannot be treated with acid-based or caustic cleaners.
  • Decking and timber: effective on oil staining on timber decking from barbecue drips, teak oil overspill, and general grease.
  • Patios, pathways, and hard-standing areas: any porous outdoor surface affected by petroleum-based contamination.

One important note: GK Oil Out is not formulated for use on tarmac. The hydrocarbon solvents in the formula are petroleum-based and can interact with and soften bituminous tarmac surfaces. For tarmac driveways, a tarmac-specific restorer product is the appropriate solution. For all other common driveway and patio surfaces, GK Oil Out is safe and effective.

How It Works

The Oil-Ingesting Mechanism

GK Oil Out penetrates into the pore structure of the material alongside existing oil contamination, working through absorption and emulsification. As it dwells, it ingests the oil into itself, drawing contamination upward from within the pores and holding it in suspension at the surface.

Rinse and Removal

When the treated area is rinsed with hot water or a pressure washer after the dwell period, both the product and the oil it has absorbed are removed together. This leaves the pore structure clear of contamination rather than simply masking the visible stain, which is what distinguishes GK Oil Out from general-purpose driveway cleaners.

Progressive Results With Repeat Applications

For heavily embedded staining, each successive application draws more oil from the pore structure, so results improve progressively with repeat treatment.

Key Features

  • Oil-ingesting formula: penetrates porous surfaces to draw petroleum-based oil and grease out from within the pore structure, not just off the surface
  • Professional-grade oil stain remover: effective on engine oil, hydraulic fluid, diesel, cooking fat, and other petroleum-based contamination
  • Ready to use: no dilution required, shake and apply directly from the bottle
  • Works in as little as one hour: dwell time adjusted to severity of staining, rinse clean with hot water or pressure washer after treatment
  • Leaves no residue: oil and product are removed together on rinsing, leaving a clean pore structure
  • Safe on natural stone including marble and granite: neutral pH, non-caustic formula will not etch, bleach, or damage sensitive stone surfaces
  • Suitable for block paving, concrete, natural stone, decking, and timber: not for use on tarmac or bituminous surfaces
  • Low odour: barely perceptible odour during application
  • Coverage: 4–6m² per litre / up to 30m² per 5-litre bottle, depending on surface porosity and contamination level
  • 24-month shelf life: in original, unopened container

Application & Storage

Prepare

Shake the container thoroughly before use to ensure the formula is fully mixed. Conduct a test application on a small, inconspicuous area first to confirm the result meets your expectations on your specific surface.

Apply

Apply GK Oil Out directly to the stained area using a garden sprayer for larger surfaces, or pour directly onto the stain for concentrated spot treatment. Apply to saturation. The surface and stain should be fully covered. Do not dilute.

Dwell

Leave the product to work for up to one hour, depending on the age and severity of the staining. Fresh, light staining may respond within 15–30 minutes. Heavy, long-established oil contamination benefits from the full 60-minute dwell time. Keep the surface wet during the dwell period. If the product dries out before the dwell time is complete, reapply to keep the area saturated.

Rinse

Remove from the surface using hot water or a jet washer. Thorough rinsing is important as the oil that has been drawn out of the surface needs to be fully flushed away. A pressure washer gives the most effective rinse on block paving and concrete.

Repeat if Necessary

For heavy or deeply embedded oil staining, repeat the process until the area is free of visible contamination. Each successive application draws more oil from the pore structure, so results improve progressively with repeat treatment.

Coverage and Storage

Coverage is approximately 4–6 square metres per litre, or up to 30 square metres per 5-litre bottle, depending on surface porosity and the volume of oil present. Highly porous surfaces and heavily saturated staining will require more product per square metre. Shelf life is 24 months in the original, unopened container.

Frequently Asked Questions

The most effective approach is to use a dedicated oil stain remover formulated to penetrate porous surfaces, like GK Oil Out, rather than household cleaners or soap. Apply to saturation, allow to dwell for up to one hour so the formula can draw oil out from within the surface pores, then rinse thoroughly with hot water or a pressure washer. Repeat if necessary for stubborn or long-established staining.
GK Oil Out uses an oil-ingesting formula that penetrates into the pore structure of the surface alongside the existing oil contamination. As it dwells, it draws the oil upward and out of the pores, holding it in suspension at the surface so it can be rinsed away cleanly. This deep-penetrating action removes contamination from within the material rather than simply masking the surface stain.
Yes. GK Oil Out is safe for use on all natural stone surfaces including Indian sandstone, limestone, slate, marble, and granite. Its neutral pH and non-caustic formula will not etch, bleach, or damage sensitive stone. This is a meaningful advantage over some other oil removers that contain acidic or caustic chemistry incompatible with natural stone.
No. GK Oil Out contains hydrocarbon solvents that are petroleum-derived and can interact with and soften bituminous tarmac surfaces. For oil removal from tarmac driveways, a different approach is required. Soap and water scrubbing is the most commonly recommended method for surface-level staining on tarmac. For heavily stained tarmac, a tarmac-specific product is the appropriate solution.
GK Oil Out works within one hour in most cases. Light or fresh staining can respond in 15–30 minutes. For older, heavily saturated staining that has been embedded in the surface for some time, the full 60-minute dwell time is recommended, with repeat applications if necessary. There is no benefit to leaving the product for longer than 60 minutes per application. Multiple shorter applications are more effective than one extended dwell.
No. GK Oil Out is designed to leave no residue after rinsing. The formula ingests the oil and is removed together with it when the surface is rinsed with hot water or a pressure washer. The treated surface is clean and ready for normal use once dry.
Yes. GK Oil Out is effective on oil staining on timber decking, including staining from cooking oil, teak oil overspill, and general grease. Apply neat to the affected area, allow it to dwell, and rinse with water. A pressure washer can be used on decking but should be operated at a lower pressure to avoid surface damage to the timber.
No. GK Oil Out is ready to use and should not be diluted. Diluting the formula reduces the concentration of active solvents and will significantly reduce its effectiveness, particularly on older or heavily embedded oil staining.
