Product Description

What Is a Stone Sealer and Why Does Natural Stone Need One?

Natural stone, whether Indian sandstone, limestone, slate, granite, marble, or porcelain, is a porous material. Its pore structure is what gives it character and texture, but it also means the stone absorbs everything it comes into contact with: rainwater, cooking oil from a barbecue, wine spilled on an outdoor dining table, engine oil tracked from a car, algae spores, and airborne contaminants.

Without a stone sealer, these substances penetrate below the surface and cause staining that becomes progressively harder to remove the longer it sits, and in the case of moisture, it creates the conditions for biological growth, freeze-thaw surface damage, and long-term deterioration of the stone.

A stone sealer is a treatment applied to the pore structure of the stone, not on top of it, that creates a barrier between the surface and contaminants. When applied correctly, it means that substances which contact the stone surface sit on top of the sealed pores rather than being absorbed into them, allowing them to be wiped or rinsed away cleanly. For outdoor stone paving, this is the difference between a surface that stains permanently and one that stays clean and maintainable for years.

GK Invisible Stone Sealer is a professional-grade penetrating stone sealer that delivers this protection while leaving the stone's appearance completely unchanged with no sheen, no darkening, and no visible coating. The stone looks exactly as it should. The protection works invisibly from within.

The Technology Behind It: Short-Chain Per-Fluorinated Polymer

Most stone sealers on the market fall into two broad categories: film-forming sealants that sit on top of the stone and create a visible surface coating, and penetrating impregnating sealers that absorb into the pore structure and work from within. GK Invisible Stone Sealer is in the second category, but what distinguishes it from most penetrating sealers is the technology at its core.

GK Invisible Stone Sealer is developed using short-chain per-fluorinated polymer technology: a class of chemistry that creates a molecular barrier within the stone's pore walls, repelling both water-based and oil-based substances simultaneously. This dual repellency is not something that standard silicone or acrylic-based stone sealers can deliver. They repel water but do not provide meaningful resistance to oil and grease penetration.

The per-fluorinated polymer molecules bond to the interior pore walls of the stone without filling or blocking the pores themselves. This is what makes the sealer breathable, allowing moisture vapour to still travel through the stone and evaporate from the surface, while liquid water and oil are repelled at the pore wall and prevented from penetrating.

For outdoor paving in particular, this breathability is critical: it allows sub-base moisture to continue escaping upward through the stone, preventing the efflorescence and surface damage caused by trapped moisture that non-breathable film sealants can produce.

What GK Invisible Stone Sealer Protects Against

Once applied, the sealed surface resists a comprehensive range of common staining and contamination:

  • Water and moisture: the primary cause of biological growth, freeze-thaw surface damage, and efflorescence in outdoor stone.
  • Oil and engine grease: driveways, parking areas, and surfaces near vehicles where petroleum contamination is common.
  • Cooking oils and fats: outdoor dining areas, barbecue patios, and kitchen terraces exposed to food preparation.
  • Food and beverage staining: the sealer is tested against ketchup, mustard, tea, coffee, and wine, making it practical for outdoor entertaining surfaces that see regular food and drink use.
  • Dirt and grime: sealed surfaces resist dirt pickup, remaining cleaner for longer between maintenance cycles.
  • Algae, moss, and biological growth: the sealed pore structure is inhospitable to biological establishment, significantly slowing the rate at which algae and moss colonise treated surfaces.

Suitable for All Natural Stone: Including the Most Sensitive

GK Invisible Stone Sealer's water-based, per-fluorinated polymer formula is safe for use on all natural stone types, including those that are too sensitive for many conventional stone sealers:

  • Indian sandstone and sandstone paving: highly porous and one of the stones that benefits most from early sealing.
  • Limestone: sensitive to acidic cleaners and chemical treatments; GK Invisible Stone Sealer is pH-neutral and completely safe on limestone.
  • Slate: both indoor and outdoor applications, including riven and smooth finishes.
  • Granite: including honed and polished granite finishes that are vulnerable to acid etching and some sealing products. This formula is confirmed safe on all granite finishes.
  • Marble: indoor and outdoor marble, including polished marble that must not be treated with acid-based or reactive chemistry.
  • Polished and exposed concrete: indoor polished concrete floors and outdoor concrete paving surfaces.
  • Block paving: protecting both the paving surface and the jointing sand from staining and biological contamination.

One critical requirement: GK Invisible Stone Sealer is an impregnating sealer that requires a porous, absorbent substrate to work. It cannot be applied over painted surfaces, previously silicone-treated stone, non-porous tiles, or any other non-absorbent surface. If in doubt, apply a small amount of water to the surface, and if it soaks in, the stone is porous and the sealer will work. If it beads, the surface is sealed or non-porous and a different approach is required.

Invisible by Design: Sealing Stone Without Changing It

The name says everything about the most important characteristic of this product from a user perspective: once applied and absorbed, GK Invisible Stone Sealer is completely invisible. No sheen. No colour change or darkening. No surface film. The stone retains exactly its natural appearance and texture, as if nothing has been applied.

This makes it the ideal stone sealer for customers who want protection without altering the aesthetic of their paving. It is equally valuable on pale, natural-look sandstone where a wet-look or enhancing sealer would change the character of the stone entirely, and on premium granite or marble where any visible coating would be immediately noticeable. For these surfaces, an invisible stone sealer is not a preference, it is the only appropriate type of product.

For customers who want to enhance and enrich the colour of their stone rather than preserve its natural appearance, a colour-enhancing or wet-look sealer would be the more appropriate product.

How It Works

Molecular Pore-Wall Bonding

The short-chain per-fluorinated polymer molecules bond to the interior pore walls of the stone without filling or blocking the pores themselves. This creates a molecular barrier that repels both water-based and oil-based substances simultaneously, something standard silicone or acrylic sealers can't deliver.

Breathable Protection

Because the pores themselves aren't filled or blocked, moisture vapour can still travel through the stone and evaporate from the surface, while liquid water and oil are repelled at the pore wall and prevented from penetrating. This allows sub-base moisture to continue escaping upward through the stone, preventing efflorescence and surface damage from trapped moisture.

Why It Stays Invisible

Because the sealer works within the pore structure rather than forming a film on top of it, there's no surface coating to change the stone's colour, sheen, or texture. The stone retains its exact natural appearance while the protection works invisibly from within.

Key Features

Application & Storage

Before You Start

Ensure the surface is completely clean, dry, and free from biological growth, staining, dirt, and dust before sealing. Treat any algae, black spot, mould, or lichen before applying, use GK Black Spot Remover for lichen and black spot, GK Pro or GK Concentrated Fungicidal Wash for algae and mould. Allow treated surfaces to dry fully before sealing. Apply a water test: if water soaks in, the stone is suitable for this sealer. If water beads, the surface is already sealed or non-porous and the product cannot be applied.

Do not apply to painted surfaces, silicone-treated stone, or non-porous surfaces.

Prepare

Shake the container well before use. Test on a small, inconspicuous area first to confirm the result meets expectations and to estimate consumption on your specific stone type.

Apply

Apply generously and evenly to saturation point using a low-pressure garden sprayer, long-pile roller, brush, or paint pad. Ensure all areas of the surface receive full coverage, any missed areas will not be protected. Mop up any pooling or excess product during application to ensure even distribution.

Apply Wet on Wet (for porous surfaces)

For porous stone, apply a second and if required third coat while the first coat is still wet. The coats must not be allowed to dry between applications. The wet-on-wet method is essential for achieving deep pore penetration on absorbent stone. One to three coats are recommended depending on porosity.

Remove Excess

Remove any excess product from the surface using a clean microfibre cloth before it dries. Product left to pool and dry on the surface will produce a patchy or milky finish that is difficult to remove.

Allow to Cure

Allow the surface to cure fully before use. Do not apply if rain is forecast within four hours of application.

Coverage and Storage

Application temperature should be between 10°C and 30°C. Do not apply during frost or on a surface that has not dried completely from recent rainfall or cleaning. One 3-litre bottle covers up to 40 square metres on less porous surfaces. Highly porous stone will absorb more product and reduce coverage per bottle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A stone sealer is a treatment that penetrates into the pore structure of natural stone and creates a barrier that repels water, oil, and staining substances. All natural stone is porous to some degree, which means without sealing it will absorb contaminants such as cooking oil, rainwater and biological growth, making contaminants that penetrate below the surface and cause staining or damage to become harder to resolve over time. Sealing is particularly important on outdoor stone paving, where the combination of moisture, biological growth, and physical contamination creates the highest risk.
For outdoor natural stone paving, a penetrating breathable stone sealer is the most appropriate type, not a film-forming surface coating. GK Invisible Stone Sealer is a penetrating impregnating sealer developed using per-fluorinated polymer technology that repels both water and oil, is breathable (allowing sub-base moisture to escape), and is completely invisible once applied. It is confirmed safe on all natural stone including Indian sandstone, limestone, granite, and marble.
Yes. The formula is specifically developed to be safe on sensitive stone types including honed granite, polished granite, and marble, which are vulnerable to acid etching and some conventional sealing products. Always conduct a small test on an inconspicuous area before full application.
No. GK Invisible Stone Sealer is formulated to be completely invisible once absorbed. The stone's natural colour, texture, and finish are unchanged after sealing. If you want to enhance or enrich the colour of your stone rather than preserve its natural appearance, a colour-enhancing or wet-look sealer would be the appropriate alternative.
Yes. GK Invisible Stone Sealer is a breathable impregnating sealer, which means moisture vapour can still travel upward through the stone from the sub-base and evaporate from the surface. This makes it safe to apply to newly laid paving without the risk of trapping sub-base moisture beneath a sealed surface, a problem associated with non-breathable film-forming sealants.
The surface must be completely clean, dry, and free from biological growth before sealing. Any algae, black spot, lichen, or mould must be treated and fully removed before the sealer is applied as sealing over biological contamination traps it beneath the seal and prevents the product from penetrating correctly. Use GK Black Spot Remover for lichen and black spot, and GK Pro or GK Concentrated Fungicidal Wash for algae and mould. Allow the surface to dry fully after cleaning before applying the sealer.
A low-pressure garden sprayer is the easiest application method for large areas. A long-pile roller, brush, or paint pad all work well on smaller areas or surfaces with restricted access. Apply to saturation point and ensure even coverage across the full surface. For porous stone, apply two to three coats wet-on-wet for best penetration.
